How Greek citizenship by descent works
- Your birth is registered at the Special Registry Office in Athens, or each generation is registered in turn.
- Adults born before the 1982/1984 cut-offs get a declaratory decision from the Citizenship Directorate.
- If the chain is broken, expatriate naturalization through the consulate is the fallback, with an interview.
- Once registered in a municipal register (dimotologio), you apply for a Greek ID and passport.
Documents you will need
- Your long-form birth certificate
- Your parents' marriage certificate
- Birth, marriage and death records for each generation back to your Greek ancestor
- Your Greek ancestor's municipal registration (dimotologio) or male registry record

Greek citizenship FAQ
Can I keep my current citizenship?
Yes. Greece allows dual citizenship, and so do the US, Australia, Canada and the UK.
Do I need to speak Greek?
Not for registration, declaratory or generational chain cases, which recognize citizenship you already have. Expatriate naturalization includes a consular interview, and we prepare you for it.
What about military service?
Greek men have a military service obligation. Men who live permanently abroad can obtain "permanent resident abroad" status, which exempts them for as long as they keep it. We handle this as part of your file.
Why do the 1982 and 1984 dates matter?
Before 18 July 1982 (through a father) and 8 May 1984 (through a mother) Greek law treated some children differently. Those cases are confirmed by a declaratory decision instead of a simple registration.
