Greek citizenship by descent: what to prepare

Citizenship at this mission: Greek citizenship and civil registry services (birth, marriage and death registrations) are listed among the consular services on the official website.

Certified long-form records, each with an apostille, then an official Greek translation.

  • Your long-form birth certificate
  • Your parents' marriage certificate
  • Birth, marriage and death records for each generation back to your Greek ancestor
  • Your Greek ancestor's municipal registration (dimotologio) or male registry record

Translate only after the apostille is attached, by a certified translator or the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs translation service.

How the process works

  1. Your birth is registered at the Special Registry Office in Athens, or each generation is registered in turn.
  2. Adults born before the 1982/1984 cut-offs get a declaratory decision from the Citizenship Directorate.
  3. If the chain is broken, expatriate naturalization through the consulate is the fallback, with an interview.
  4. Once registered in a municipal register (dimotologio), you apply for a Greek ID and passport.
